Why it was doomed to fail

    Main problems

    1) effectively playing 4-6-0, with cahill and fellaini most advanced was never going to work.  fellaini was hopeless again in the air despite his height and was often nudged off the ball, and even when he did get the ball, he hasnt got it in his locker to rake that 30 yard pass or through ball, and cahill hasnt got the pace to take on lescott or kompany even if the ball did get through

    2) At times it was 10-0-0. even when we did clear the ball, it went straight to a city player again poor tactics, and the pressure was back on.  No one is saying play 4-4-2, But to just play this formation for 90mins and hope it works and have wave after wave of attack is suicidal.  if balotelli never scored when he did they would of brought on tevez, and thrown the kitchen sink for the last 15 minsw we would of been under immense pressure.

    3) lack of pace upfront is why the formation never worked.  even when we did get the ball we were simply just passing it around, there was no drive to get forward,  and cahill and fellaini were never going to run past the defense.

    3) we played similar to this against chelsea in the cup final and sporting lisbon away and lost both times.

    4) the 4-6-0 formation didnt even give us the option of a counter attack due to the lack of pace of fellaini and cahill.  and baines having to do his duties at LB and not getting forward.

    Whatt moyes should have done

    1) If he intends to play defensive have an outlet, he should of started saha, at least when he had the ball he could turn and run and lescott and kompany with citys full backs always forwards, would of given saha space to run and effectively play counter attacking football.

Played hetinga and jags at the back, with distin at LB (would of played another LB, but we dont have one), and baines ahead of him, again that would of given us another outlet baines defensive work at LB is pretty average anyway.  so when we did get the ball in midfield. baines could make a run and take on the full back,

that would of given us options when we had the ball.  Howard could aim for fellaini so he could get the ball and pass to saha,  Baines would of given us another option, with richards coming so far forward, baines would of had a chance to have forward runs and take the pressure off the defense.

and leaving saha up front. with city playing a high line, he could of played the offside trap, and given the defenders an option, when they had the ball.

All in all poor tactics cost us.  even promoted teams dont play like that when the go to the big teams, because it doesent work.  sure they may only lose 1-0 or 2-0.  but the most you can get is a draw, and then when the opposition team scores, you have to change the team and then you leave holes at the back.

Obviously we were expected to defend at times, but with no real outlet, were always going to lose.

    poor team selection and tactics.

I have to agree with you here Tickets about the poor selection and tactics.

Some interesting suggests as to what Moyes should have done - Playing Distan at Left back.

However, I wouldn't have started with Saha upfront - Lescott and Kompany are both very physical players and would have destroyed Saha.  Vellios would offer more.

So, play Distin (our best performing CB) at left back and Baines (England's best left back) in left midfield you say... X_X

As for 4-6-0 and 10-0-0.... good god man...

At times, if you looked we played 1-1-1-2-1-1-3! Watch the game, its true!!!

If the Referee made all the right decisions, then I'm betting that we would've got at least a point out of the game. The first goal came from a throw in which should've been ours, and Moyes may not have even brought on Royston if it was still 0-0.

No more crazy then playing Neville in Centre Mid and Felli up front and Ossie on the left wing.

What I mean is, just because Moyes might have played Felli up top and Ossie on the left; does not mean that Tickets suggestion of Distin at left back and Baines in left mid is a good one, or even justifiable...

I dunno mate - you're talkin about presently our best CM and LB being played outta position; against felli in a advanced position that he did well in against WBA and Ossie who isnt one of our best players...

tickets dont bother unless your a moyes lover nobody will agree with you, moyes surrendered at start of game with his inept jobs for the boys selections and tactics, he said enough with his comment "that were going into a fight armed with a knife and they have a gun," good game moyes just let your players know you have fk all confidense in them getting a result.
