Like sam said... but also I guess theres the shock factor in the uk as there's a bit a taboo about eating it... plus they reckon this horsemeat has probably been pumped full of all sorts a sheet...  :-S

Problem with it mate is its uncontrolled and done illegally. If its full of bute its gonna affect people. Vets are legally obliged to record the prescription of Bute on a horses passport but in reality they never do. I can ask my vet for bute and he'll give it to me no problem.

People are buying beef but eating horse. Would you buy horse lasagne?

According to a farmer friend, the animals can be obtained very cheaply. This is supported by reports on the internet (sorry, no link, I can't be_arsed on this occasion) that there has been a glut of them since the collapse of the Irish economy. The slaughtering/butchery cost should not be much more than for a bullock.

The main risk is that your new animal may contain drugs which are unfit for consumption. Does anyone know if they come with documents detailing their provenance or treatment history? I guess that the only sure way would be to have the thing blood-tested by a vet. This would cost more money, plus the thing would have to be fed, pending the results of the tests, just in case it is a good'un.

Also, during the current media furore, butchers may be reluctant to take the work on. They will not want pictures of their skips full of horse offal appearing in the red-top newspapers. I suppose the hooves and heads could be mutilated beyond recognition, but I guess that this would be beyond their usual remit, and telling manual workers to do something just a little bit out of the ordinary is fraught with error- most of them cannot think; they are just trained monkeys (mmm... I wonder what they cost?). I guess slaughterman's labourers are no different to those in the building industry. You would have to undertake to do this task yourself, to protect the professional reputation of your butcher, otherwise he may refuse the work or add a hefty surcharge. I wonder how long it would take using, for example, a lump hammer and bolster chisel? I imagine it would be a good way to work up an appetite.

You can buy a pony at auction for as little as 20 quid. I wouldn't advise anyone too though because I'll sell you one for a grand.  Yes there should be documentation to say which drugs have been given bit nobody bothers filling it in. Its also supposed to be illegal to sell a horse without a passport, everyone still does it though. Impossible to enforce really. Anything born after a certain date has to be microchipped too. So, if you have microchips with your lasagne you know something is wrong.

I eat horse a lot it is nicer and tastier but stronger than beef ,kind of wild taste that you get with deer and pheasant etc.
It is the not knowing I suppose .When my son came to visit we gave him horse and he loved it but said if he would have known in advance he would have refused it .
Here it is about half the cost of similar cuts of beef but with wild mushroom sauce and cumin potatoes
    wow
