Trust in youth

There's a thread about homegrown players and it got me thinking.

In recent times we have brought through some good young talent. What concerns me is that we dont appear to trust them that much. If you look at Jose Baxter, Jack Rodwell, Ross Barkley then you have players who on the face of it could be in the England set up in the future. Unfortunately Moyes appears to wrap them up in cotton wool. If they're good enough they're old enough is the old saying and I can't see why he can't just let them play. Okay Rodders is finally getting game time but how is Moyes going to manage Barkley? For me I'd have him in there playing. Give him games.

Look at manure and what Fergie does. If he trusts enough in a young lad then he plays them. The average age of some of the teams they field is really young. If fergie had Barkley or Rodwell they would be playing week in week out. When Moyes says they need time doesn't that send out the message he doesn't trust them?

moyes dosnt trust himself at times, i think he wont have much option but to play the youngsters, given the size of the squad, i have a sneaking feeling, were going to do something special this season.

I gotta agree...let the kids play. Can't baby them forever. I like the youth movement that they have going. After moving Arteta and signing Denis and Drenthe, the average age of the team has dropped a bit. The kids are hungry and will play hard.

four games into season and hes already benched barkley, come on theres protecting players but its silly barkley should be in the team until he looks like he needs a rest, but 4 games in and moyes has left him out, vellios has to be given a start , as for baxter from what ive seen hes not good enough.

Young players imo should play the first few months for 60minutes, then play a full game every other week before eventually playing every week.
Moyes seems to have the opinion that young players should play when the old ones are broken a lot of the time but Barkley is probably just being rested for a game, I would expect him back in the next game against Brom.

We do seem to have a good youth system because we have somegood youngsters coming through. With the best start we have had for years I am happy with the way things are going but would like to see them getting good game time.

Another point is why protect them too much because in all likelihood they will only be with us for 2-3 years before we cash in therefore play them more to get a better price for them.

You're forgetting Ross Barkley is only 17! I think the comparison you're making with Alex Ferguson is misleading - And he does the same thing as Moyes anyway!

Johnny Evans didn't break into the team until he was 20 and still spent a couple of years making the odd appearance only covering injuries (and still is in fact)

Danny Wellbeck is only getting an odd cameo appearance now aged 20. Smalling was the same!

Phil Jones is a signing from another club - and is 2 years older than Barkley and only a year younger than Rodwell. Would he be getting in the side for 90 minutes every week if Man U were like us and only had league and domestic cup games to think about - or if Ferdinand and Vidic weren't crock?

Even the likes of David Beckham and Paul Scholes were 20/21 before they got regualar games at Manure

There was the odd exception like Giggs and Ronaldo who broke thru at 17/18 - but we've had that too with Rooney and now Barkley (who'll still probably appear in about 20-25 games this season)

Ferguson had the luxury of being safe to send players out on loan so that they'd make their mistakes at other clubs. Even if the likes of Barkley and Rodwell were to only start a games once a month, we need them!

I take your point Beano, but I do think Moyes is a bit hap hazard in how he does it. You're right Barkley is younger, but he is an exceptional talent and was playing well, but then he's dropped already. I'll eat me words if he gets a run out on Wednesday but I have a suspicion that Moyes wont play him.

I think some of the players that you refer to at United aren't as good as the players we have brought through. Johnny Evans doesnt come into it for me - I dont rate him. Wellbeck went out on loan but then they had/have Rooney/Mexican Kid and the Godfather, so he wasnt really in line to start for them... but that changed when he played well at Sunderland (who did give him a chance) and Fergie is now letting him play (injuries aside).

If Moyes thought Ross was too good to send out on loan because he felt we needed him, then surely he should play him? At 17 he isnt going to get tired out; and if he plays well enough then he should play? My point would be that I see Ross/Jack as in the same league as Giggs/Ronaldo ie Fergie would play them.

I agree, he wraps them up too much. He doesn't loan them out because if we get injuries, we need them to fill the bench/vacant positions, yet he doesn't play em.

I agree about Evans. I have said in another thread already today that Evans is 54ite!

Another point I would make is that we can't really judge it as if all players have the same personality. It's something that needs to be taken on a case-by-case basis. One guy can take it all in his stride and appear in every game in his first season - another can get a bit lost in it. You really have to know the person involved. We don't!

with Rodwell - don't forget he was competeing with our all-time record signing for a place in the team. When Ronaldo signed for United, he already had experience at a decent level with Sporting Lisbon and was only competing with the mighty Quinton fortune and Kieron Richardson who was about the same age. Giggs didn't have any left winger at Utd to compete with for a place as far as I can remember.

fact is, a squad that is and which for years has been so small, cannot send players out on loan. We need them!
