one interesting study that was done (mind you i dont believe this proves the intrinsic nature of empathy) was of four separate living containers with four chimps in it ... 1 lever for food to be dispensed and they just let them go for a while to get used to the lever ... when they did then they began to issue cries of a monkey being electrocuted every time the food lever was pulled ... the chimps began starving themselves ... interesting bit seemingly a slice of evidence that compassion is genetic

Is that not a learned response rather than genetic ?

I don't think I have any compassion genes at all. Worries me a bit, I feel almost emotionless.

well whats making them respond that way ... thats the bit that we term empathy that could be construed as genetic ... its learned that the lever "shocks" a monkey but not learned what to do after that information is aquired

Bu' I suppose the argument is tha' there is an underlyin' empathy tha' prevents them pullin' the lever once they've made the causal connection between i' bein' pulled an' (in addition to food) fellow species are 'eard to be sufferin' like...

Is it not response to a sound ?

Did they try other sounds ?

If they were in a glass cage and there was a dividing wall with 4 monkeys eating and 4 not would they show compassion watching them starve ? If there was a hole would they pass it through ?

these monkeys were in separated living containers with no possibility to see any other of the chimps in the study ... and of course its a response to a sound but to them they associate that sound with some kind of concept they have of pain so to try other sounds is pointless ... also to say everything is learned is just plain not true ... you didn't learn to develop your body to the point it is now but you yourself (there is not duality of body and mind) did it ... so we are informed by our genes all the time ... the fact that our conscious mind does not have a direct experience of this doesnt matter ... unless you are trying to expand the meaning of learned to a very abstract point

Id argue , eye colour , hair colour , height and how we look is genetic

Everything else is learned. You arent good because your parents were or bad either.

You learn the difference between right and wrong or what you percieve to be.

Now if genetics is argued are we saying Peter Sutcliffe was always genetically bad ?

all i propose is that "everything" is not learned of course as we begin to form a sense of self and other then learning occurs ... there is no one i think who has a 100% genetic deterministic sense of the world
