an old saying I was taught- message for the anti kenwright brigade and BU

a man walks down the street crying. he's bought a new pair of shoes and they don't fit him. he carries on walking and sees another man crying and asks "why are you crying?". He replies "I've got no shoes". The guy with no shoes walks past him and carries on further down the road, until he sees a man in a wheelchair. He asks " why are you crying?" his reply "I've got no feet"

The moral of the story is, never moan at what you haven't got, because so many people in this world really are suffering. I think this saying can be used in all aspects of life, but for everton supporters I think it's relevant because , like the guy with wrong sized shoes and no shoes, we need to carry on and be grateful for what we have got. It could be so much worse.

also I think we should be grateful for kenwright- he's a rich man compared to the average guy on the street. He's probably got more wealth than anyone that has ever visited the blueroom and perhaps more wealth than everyone put together protesting on saturday. He just can't compete with the clubs who have the oil money. Yet whilst we are all complaining about not having that much money, kids even in our own country are going to bed hungry. We should be more grateful for kenwright for his input.Anyone else know where i'm coming from here?

A good point, but just try and imagine the time when this motto was introduced. Did it represent greed and cheating?Did it represent paying to win trophies like city and chelsea, and having an unfair advantage over any other team? I don't think it ever did. I believe that it represents an attitude whereby every player in the team should give their best in every game, go the extra inch and have a never say die attitude. By playing like this and generally living your life like this, you are effectively nothing but the best, because you are willing to go furhter than your opponents and will achieve more than those who are less committed. That's how I view it, we're all different but that's just my outlook.

I never really thought of this, I see people using the motto as a bludgeon and it irritates me, however it's nothing in essence.  We all want to win, but at what cost?

I must admit, I like this view on the motto. It does put a different spin on how its meaning is generally viewed.
I think your right in one perspective that the motto did not repesent greed or money for trophies.

However, do you go to watch Everton because the club don't invest money on new, better players?
Do you watch Everton on occasions when they lose and smile with a thought that people in the world are worse off?
I personally watch Everton because I want to see them win, this is a competition after all. Football unfortunately does require money to compete these days. Compete being the opperative word.

One could also ask, did this motto represent dishonesty? I put it in the same category as cheating.

Great thread Andy and share the same content with where we are today.

I grew up in Scotland and while up their wanted to follow a team as I could not get to see Everton. Everyone in my neighbourhood supported Rangers or Celtic eventhough Kilmarnock was the local team. I chose KIlmarnock and watched them go down to the bottom league and back up to the top flight. It was exciting because you never knew what was going to happen. Celtic and Rangers expected to win so apart from the 4 games against each other they did not get the joy of the win.

I like that we are a successful local club living within our means and never confident of a result or knowing whether we will be top half or bottom each season. I would hate to be a City supporter because there is no soul left and every season you have a new team and when the oil money gets board then the club will not be able to return to normality instead be out of business.

If we finish in the top 4 or win a cup it will be a great experience and a rollacoster year for all involved but if City win anything it had nothing to do with the manager, supporters, local community or staff but purely middle eastern money.

I do get frustrated after losing a game and having no success, of course I don't always think of those worse off. However, I don't agree with all the constant moaning and ungratefullness directed towards Bill Kenwright, when he has put some investment into the club and if it weren't for a Chairman like him controling our money, we may have ended up much worse off like Leeds and Portsmouth. I guess this is where the original saying fits in.

"One could also ask, did this motto represent dishonesty? I put it in the same category as cheating."

I strongly believe that Nothing but the best is good enough was never invented for 'winning at all costs' , as this attitude simply never existed when football first began. At this time in society(1878),the main purpose of any sport was to introduce rules, integrity and fair play, health and fitness, to 'toughen up' society ect. Considering football had only just started, I presume everyone was pretty much as good as eachother, so in order to be nothing but the best you had to be willing to fight for every inch, go further than your opponents and have a never say die attitude. Buying a team of eleven superstars was simply not done in order to be nothing but the best. In my eyes, considering that you do need to pay your way to success nowadays, the original meaning has expired. To be nothing but the best now, you do have to have a 'win at all costs' attitude and have more money to win trophies.
I hope this comment explains my point of view in more detail

    Andy,

Can I please ask you to explain why you think BK controls our money? He openly said in the 'taped' meeting that he doesn't know, has no idea what the £24m of other operation cost are. He actually said, and I quote “Guys, I do not run the football club…the chairman doesn’t run the football club".
If 'he' is controlling the clubs money so well then why did he have to give the banks a document saying they can't stop us from trading and asking them 'not to kill us this season'?
I'm not having a pop at your opinion, I'm just asking you to explain why you think he controls the money well? What reason do you have for believing this? When we are the only club in all the leagues who don't have a penny to spend.

I totally agree with your analogy of nothing but the best and I too wouldn't want to succeed if it meant cheating. I don't condone Man C or Chelseas way of getting to the top at all.
I would like to see the motto reflected back onto the club however, in a honest way. I like the attitude of the playing staff inc Moyes and I don't want primadonnas at this club either!
I would like the honesty policy to flow through the backroom staff, ie the board because I for one am yet to see this!

I would like someone to prove me wrong and turn my negative outlook into a positive one and I invite anyone (without insulting me) to do this because all I see is dishonesty and as much as the motto may have stood for anything other than cheating and buying silverware, it also didn't stand for dishonesty.

The Kings Dock money was ringfenced?
We won't sell Rooney, even for 50m?
    Fortress Sports Fund?
Goodison would fail its safety inspection?
    Park End Project?
We are not a sellling club?
The club is for sale? (Not according to Elstone)
    We have manangeable debt?
Moyes will get 5m a season to spend?
    Watch this space?

I guess the question is, would you rather have silverware bought or lies and no silverware?

My thoughts exactly.. They also cost the club valuable funds when they failed to offer Dan Gosling a contract in time , enabling him to leave on a Free transfer. Its just been a catalogue of errors and untruths.

Why thank you Nismo, I had forgotten all about that blunder!
Lets not forget though, BK said it was all Dan Goslings fault for going back on a gentlemens handshake.. hmm!

I patiently await the flood of pro-board to flock to this thread and give me serious and adult like reason as why I should have every faith in the current board and their regime. I want my faith back as much as the next man so please, no holds barred. I want to be convinced!!!
I am not naive and I fully appreciate that the current board are educated enough to do the job. For me, it's whether they do that job justice, successfully and without an alterior motive.

    No abuse please!
    Civil discussion only!

    Thanks :)

I'm by no means Kenwrights biggest fan, I was devestated he wanted to take the club to Kirkby and not sorting the Kings dock stadium out. Referring to money control, what I meant was- he has made sure the debt has been reduced to a minimum by not spending too much.  Teams like Leeds and  Portsmouth  spent too much  borrowed money  on players that they couldn't pay back to the banks, went into bankruptcy and both went down two divisions. In my opinion Kenwright has prevented that, our debt can be delt with well in comparison to many other clubs.

He hasn't though has he, the banks have made sure he can't borrow any more and they are bills words not mine.

Anyhow I don't think anyone has any interest in trying to prove what a bad job BK has done so far, that is clear for all to see and only gives doubters reasons to doubt.
It is more about what he can do to move the club forward. His words again 'nothing'. He can't even sell the club, if indeed it has been up for sale all this time.
If you wanted to sell your house and wasn't successful for 4 years would you continue with the failed method or pay actual estate agents to do a better job?

Whats wrong with wanting Everton to move forward.. The Kenwright lovers seem happy to tread water . If Kenwright and Co can't provide the funds or the necessary business acumen to move Everton forward then "YES theyall have to stand aside.
