We've got a fairly young squad but we do have a few key  members of that squad that are reaching the end of the line for the EPL.

SAHA : Born: 08/08/1978 : 33 yrs old. His injury problems arent going to improve. he's practically unsellable now.

DISTIN : Born: 16/12/1977 : 34 yrs old. done a great job, but he's not going to be around too much longer.

CAHILL: Born: 06/12/1979 : 32 yrs old. again, reaching the end of the line plus he would like to get back to oz.

NEV: Born: 21/01/1977 : 34 yrs old. been a great signing. how many more seasons? one!

HOWARD:  Born: 06/03/1979 : 32 yrs old. goalies last longer so no hurry here.

have we got any lads coming thru, or do we have to try and buy?

    Howard
    Coleman, Jags, Heittinga, Baines
    Gueye, Fellaini, Rodwell, Barkley, Billy
    Vellios

Is a fairly young but capable side, Vellios nearly scored this weekend which is promising.
Possibly Drenthe and Stracqualursy coem the end of the year as well

    Silva
    Mustafi
    Forshaw
    Duffy
    Baxter
    Wallace
    McAleny for the bench

I don't want either of them in our back 4.

    We will need new signings.

I'm not overly concerned by the age of our squad. A squad actually needs a couple of veterans to help the younger lads get thru. There was a league table of average squad ages last week and Everton were ranked 11th youngest/9th oldest, whichever was you wann look at it.

So we're pretty much bang on average!

I don't think the age of certain members of the squad is a problem. Howard could still have another decade ahead of him if the age of keepers today is anything to go by. Overall though. aslong as they keep playing well I don't care how old they are, even Saha because he can be a game changer when he is fit.

goalies seem to last for ever, and as far as tim is concerned that suits me fine.

its our defence that may be a problem. nev and distin. we already have a stricker problem and we dont have much cash!

I'm not really that concerned by that.

Howard will keep going for a good while yet.

Neville was bought for his experience and will probably join the management team here when he hangs up his boots.

Cahill will continue for a good while yet but we have fellaini, assuming he signs and other good midfield prospects. Plus I think we will look to replace arteta in the next two windows anyway. As drenthe, is pretty much a replacement from pienaar.

And Distin and Saha weren't really bought in to be long term first choices for Everton. Saha was always going to offer intermittent quality, but quality we can't really afford. And Distin for me was a bit of late cover for the lescott deal but he has really done well for us and pretty much made moyes's mind up re yobo. I'm thinking that once Yobo's is sold on a permanent deal and this wage is properly freed up, he will be replaced with someone to take over from Distin.

To be honest, I'd say only Cahill is an issue. And you'd expect Moyes to have had another 1.5-2million gamble pay off by then.

The majority of the youngsters in our squad are not capable of filling in, we'll require new signings. The only ones capable for starting line up places for me, are Rodwell, Coleman (but not at RB), Vellios, Gueye (no idea what his strongest position is), Barkley and I suppose you could still count Fellaini as a younger player.

Neville is easily past it by now, when I saw the QPR game, he looked as though he was operating 50x slower than everyone else on the pitch, and he's reverted back to his usual long ball smack up at Cahill, which gives posession away. I know we'll find it hard replacing his leadership qualities, but the fact is, he shouldn't be playing. When we played gorgeous football a few seasons ago, even Nevill was keeping it on the deck, but these days he just smacks it.

Distin, for me, has never been a good enough replacement for the defence that contained Yobo/Jags and CB, and to an extent, Lescott. I don't understand what Yobo has done to fall so out of favour, but to me, he's still better than Distin is, and don't give me the 'Yobo is prone to mistakes' stuff, because we've seen more than enough that Distin is too.

Saha, good player when he can be arsed. Personally, I feel he's a bit like Yakubu, but once again, Moyes reluctance to move away from a 4-5-1 never really gave him (or Beckford) a chance, as the only strikers we had before this transfer window who could play that position were Yak, and Vellios (and apparently Vellios wasn't ready). I'll wait to reserve judgement on Denis.

I'd like to see Drenthe here permanently if he plays well, but will have to wait and see about that. I think Cahill still has another 3 years in him, he still seems fit, and more importantly,  defenders think he's a pain in the ****.

I think the most important thing for our team going forward, is for Moyes to drop the stupid 4-5-1, it's too easy to play against nowadays, you either need to play 4-4-2, 4-3-3, or 4-1-2-2-1 (midfielders shaped like a V). 4-5-1 is far too negative, and we struggle when we play teams playing the same formation. I would be happy if we played it against the top 4, and at tricky away games, but against QPR at home? Give me a break.

I actually think Cahil is our biggest problem.  He is the type of player that shines just often enough that you really need him on the field, but is not enough of a threat to help the team go from "good" to "great".  The fact that he really has no role other than the off-striker postion pushes us to a 4-5-1, which in turn limits our forward pressure.

When fit, you really need to play rodwell, felliani, and cahill.  this will change as cahill ages, but my fear is we will still put too much focus on the central midfield role and not enough on developing a squad that can finish with some consistency.  Until then, we are trapped in a bad formation.

I totally agree with your comments on the young players and the formation. I like Moyes alot, but he needs to realize that a 4-4-2 is a better formation and will be more attacking. Need to play 2 strikers...Vellios/Denis along with a speedy guy.
