    Just told me ol' mam i have tonsillitis, she told me to go and gargle hot salted water, i said i will get some anti - b's she cursed (called me daft, that's a curse for me mam) at me and told me not to bother the Doctor when salt water will strip my throat and see me right in a few days, woman is barkin!

    Or is she, any truth in any of these old wives tale cures?

    I do believe in hot toddies for a cold, but that could just be as it gets you drunk!

    All it helps with is pain , like gargling with aspirin

    It won't get rid of it


    I find tonsillectomy helps

    Big wuss me mate, i couldn't bare the thought of being put out, freaks me out. I don't get it often so i'll stick with that as an excuse not to get it done!

    oof, thanks bluey put i'll pass, i have had one procedure under local anaesthetic and the mental torture of knowing what was happening was bad enough. although if i'm honest i don't think it worked either well at least on one side i felt everything!

    Gotta admit mate , I don't fancy the idea of tonsils removed under a local either.


    Had an arthroscopy on my knee under one and that was bad enough.

    I think there's a lot of sense in these old wives' tales.....

    I see guys in my office rush to the chemist to buy something the minute they feel a sniffle coming on, when half a lemon in water would be just as (or as least) effective.

    As for the tonsils - hang on to them for as long as you can. Don't even consider having them removed unless absolutely necessary.
