Andy Spence expects his Everton players to “respond in the manner I know they will” after their 1-0 defeat to Yeovil Town.

Hannah Short’s long-range effort proved decisive despite the Blue Girls dominating proceedings at the Clayson Stadium, boasting 28 shots on goal.

Hannah Cain came closest to finding a deserved equaliser, bending a fine effort that looked destined for the top corner only for Gloves keeper Megan Walsh to somehow get a hand to it. Frustratingly for the visitors, she was then on hand to tip the rebound from Chaney Boye-Hlorkah onto the post.

Walsh’s heroics were a theme throughout as she denied Chloe Kelly and Inessa Kaagman. Georgia Brougham also saw a header drift agonisingly wide.

Spence could not fault the performance of his players and was left rueing a display that went unrewarded. But he has backed his squad to bounce back quickly.

“In a normal day we would be sitting here talking about a great performance and a good win,” he said. “But that just wasn’t to be today. It’s important the girls stick together now and make sure they respond in the manner that I’m sure they will do.

“In terms of attacking play, that is probably the best we’ve played all season. We stayed calm and coped with the situation around the game.

“We must have had close to 30 shots on goal and that would win you three games. Unfortunately we have faced some really good goalkeeping, although there were maybe a few situations where we could have been a bit more clinical with our final strike or decision.

“We have dominated possession, attacked with good quality and limited Yeovil to two or three long range shots. Generally that is enough to win a game of football but today it wasn’t.

“No one is culpable. The girls have done well to get us into good positions and sometimes it just happens like that. There were a couple of deflections, we’ve missed it from a yard – it’s those kinds of moments that tell you it might just not be your day.

“It was a freak goal that won it. It happens, and when you have so much of the ball you just hope you can go on and rectify the situation. On this occasion, we couldn’t.”
