Three first half goals consigned Everton Under-23s to defeat against Hertha Berlin II at Goodison Park.
Sidney Friede opened the scoring quarter of an hour into the Premier League International Cup contest, reacting quickly to stab home from a corner.
Friede had earlier hit a post, but was on hand to double the German’s lead minutes after his first.
Sinan Kurt did well to get by Matthew Foulds and he cut the ball back for Friede to slam past Mateusz Hewelt without breaking stride.
Fabio Mirbach then added a third on 35 minutes as the Blues found themselves with plenty to do.
But after the break they made the perfect start to their fightback – Gethin Jones cut in from the right to fire a left-footed shot past Ruben Aulig.
However Hertha nullified the Toffees and secured the victory that sees them join Athletic Bilbao on four points after the Spanish side beat Reading 3-2. Everton now sit third.
