Everton Under-23s bowed out of the Premier League International Cup despite a good display against Athletic Bilbao.
A win over Reading and a defeat to Hertha Berlin meant the young Blues needed to beat their Spanish visitors to have any chance of progressing to the next stage of the competition.
They made the perfect start – Callum Connolly heading home on nine minutes.
But after Jonjoe Kenny had seen a penalty saved, awarded after Harry Charsley was brought down, Athletic found an equaliser when Inigo Cordoba fired past Chris Renshaw.
Both sides traded chances after the break but it was Bilbao who struck the decisive blow – Unai Nunez stabbing home from close range.
