EitC Helps Transform Area In Blue Mile

Everton in the Community (EitC) joined forces with local councillor Joe Hanson to transform a barren piece of land within the Blue Mile – a one-mile radius around Goodison Park - into an area the local community can be proud of.

The project was funded by the Youth Social Action Programme - Community Foundation for Merseyside and the #iwill campaign which looks to empower more people into volunteering.

The land was transformed by a team of EitC Free School students, volunteers and Youth Zone participants into an area the local community can enjoy and utilise. The local council kick-started the project by clearing weeds and covering the land in bark, before EitC students and volunteers painted the surrounding fences and planted seeds for vegetables and plants.

The Youth Zone has already benefitted from these facilities after harvesting and cooking the homegrown vegetables. The garden area can be found next to The People’s Hub on 46 Spellow Lane.

Sean Melia, Neighbourhood Officer for Everton in the Community, said: “This project has helped enhance a small area of the Blue Mile that had previously been allowed to fall into disrepair.

“It has allowed residents to enjoy and appreciate the space while also providing local children and volunteers the opportunity to take part in activities that they previously had no opportunity of doing.

“This includes planting, growing, picking, preparing and eating vegetables. A special thanks must go to Ryan, one of the volunteers who has assisted with the project. His knowledge and expertise has helped the garden become what it is today."
