Everton Under-23s took time out of their pre-season training camp in Spain to make a donation of merchandise to a local poverty and social exclusion programme.

The Premier League 2 champions have been at the La Manga Club facilities in the south east of the Mediterranean nation and travelled with bags of Everton-branded school equipment and assorted gifts.

And in a visit organised by the Club’s Deputy CEO, Professor Denise Barrett-Baxendale MBE, Young Blues’ boss David Unsworth took his 24-man squad and coaching staff to the nearby CaixaBank immediately after Friday morning’s training session.

The private “la Caixa” Banking Foundation contributes to the development of the community and has a budget of €500million for the calendar year to commit to social action.

More than 62 per cent of that budget is distributed to programmes dedicated to eradicating poverty and protecting socially-disadvantaged groups or those at risk of exclusion such as children from underprivileged families.

This ethos and activity echoes that of Everton in the Community and, with Unsworth and his Under-23 squad closing in on their fundraising target to purchase and sustain a household for young homeless people in Liverpool, a chord was struck among the Blues.

“After being treated so well during our stay here in La Manga, we had a wonderful opportunity of meeting Miguel and his staff and handing over some Everton merchandise for his community foundation,” said former Toffees defender Unsworth. “As always we are keen to help the less fortunate at home or abroad."

Barrett-Baxendale added: “I am delighted that we have made an international community connection with a partner who closely shares our value system and we look forward to fostering a strong, sustainable relationship when the boys visit again for future training camps.”
