Blues defender Leighton Baines brushed up on his maths skills in March when Finch Farm welcomed Countdown’s Rachel Riley through its doors as part of a BBC Learning feature.
The series of features, named Maths of the Day, explore numbers in football and highlight the maths in the sport and shows how accessible and enjoyable it can be. As well as studying the statistics in football, the feature also focuses on the various elements of maths in the game.
Baines joined students from Everton Free School as they found out more about performance analysis and the statistics used when analysing player performances in modern football before the left-back spoke with Riley and the group about how maths plays an important in part in the sport when tracking both fitness levels, work rates and individual player performances.
